• Providing mother’s daily need to iodine supplement during pregnancy according to the recommendation of the American Thyroid Association.

• Helping in the supply of mother’s daily need for vitamin E, C, and B group vitamins during pregnancy
Nutritional needs are increased during pregnancy for support of fetal growth and development. Providing the mother’s total nutritional needs through the natural regimen is unlikely and taking supplements is one of the easy ways to supply these needs.
Iodine deficiency during pregnancy leads to inadequate production of thyroid hormones and thus irreversible fetus brain damages. So the American Thyroid Association recommends that pregnant women take a supplement containing 150 μg iodine daily. Taking enough iodine is also necessary before pregnancy to be sure about the enough iodine storage in thyroid gland.
Folate deficiency during pregnancy is associated with numerous problems including newborn’s low weight, abortion and fetus’s spinal cord defects. Taking folic acid supplements during pregnancy can prevent these problems and use of this supplement is also recommended before pregnancy for preventing fetus’s spinal cord defects.
Even mother’s mild vitamin B12 deficiencies might lead to growth slow down and sometimes permanent child’s brain problems and the low level of this vitamin before pregnancy is associated with increased risk of recurrent abortion in the first stage of pregnancy.
Vitamin B group’s deficiency before pregnancy increases the risk of preterm delivery and deficiency of these vitamins during pregnancy will lead to the birth of low weight newborns.
Vitamin C passes through placenta and the need for this vitamin increases during pregnancy. This vitamin protects the body tissues against free radicals as an antioxidant. Antioxidants deficiency leads to oxidative stress which is one of the most important causes of pregnancy problems like preeclampsia.
Studies showed that vitamin C administration was effective in curing one of the common causes of infertility so taking vitamin C before pregnancy is probably effective in increasing the fertility.
Positive effects have been reported of vitamin E in fighting against the problems of fertility as an antioxidant. So it is recommended that women, especially in the age of fertility, take this vitamin.
