Cholecalciferol ( vitamin D ) is a fat -soluble vitamin, which is essential for bone health throughout life.Vitamin D enhances the absorption of calcium in the gut and bones.
Vitamin D is synthesized in the skin through exposure to sunlight.vitamin D supplements are recommended for those who do not receive direct sunlight(people living in areas with inadequate sunlight or excessive use of sunscreen). Calcium supplements can't be efficient in the treatment of osteoporosis, if the level of vitamin D is low.
Infants and children need high amount of vitamin D because of physiological status of growing and low level of vitamin D in breast milk. Therefore vitamin D deficiency is commmon among these groups.
Overdose of vitamin D causes hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypercalciuria and hyperphosphaturia. Renal and cardivascular systems are more susceptible to hypercalcemia and hypercaciuria. The vitamin D toxicity symptoms are, anorexia, sweating, headache, thirst, drowsiness and dizziness.
During taking vitamin D supplements, you should be aware of the amount of vitamin D in fortified foods, dietary supplements and other medications that are prescribed councurrently.
concomitant use of thiazide diuretics and vitamin D increase the risk of hypercalcemia.vitamin D may increase the risk of digoxin toxicity.
Antiepileptic drugs such as carbamazepine ,phenobarbital or phenytoin include vitamin D deficiency.
cholestyramine and mineral oils reduce vitamin D absorption.
This supplement contains high level of vitamin D.Please be aware of administered dose.Administration of therapeutic dose of vitamin D may lead to hypercalcemia.it leads to calcium deposition in soft tissues and vascular and renal calcification.Regular monitoring of serum calcium levels is recommended, especially at the beginning of the treatment or if the symptoms of toxicity become significant .
High serum levels of calcium and vitamin D /Unusual sensitivity to vitamin D.
Vitamin D is safe when used in doses below the upper tolerable level (UL) of 4000 IU per day.
